In the podcast, Jessica discusses her paper “Statistical Hypothesis Testing versus Machine Learning Binary Classification”. She noticed several high-impact cancer research papers using multiple hypothesis testing for binary classification problems. Concerned that these papers had no guarantee on their claimed false discovery rates, she and co-author Xin Tong wrote a perspective article about clarifying hypothesis testing and binary […]
Yiling Elaine Chen will join Dr. Wei Li’s lab at UC Irvine as a postdoctoral researcher. Ruochen Jiang will join Veracyte Inc. as a bioinformatics scientist. Xinzhou Ge will stay in our group as a postdoctoral researcher.
Ruochen developed mbImpute, an imputation method for microbiome sequencing count data. The work was published in Genome Biology. Congratulations!
Kexin Li, Dongyuan Song, and Guan’ao Yan were selected to receive the UCLA Summer Mentored Research Fellowship. Congratulations!
Chris Dong was selected to receive the National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) “Modeling and Understanding Human Behavior: Harnessing Data from Genes to Social Networks” (MENTOR) Fellowship. Congratulations Chris!
Nan (Miles) received his Ph.D. in statistics in May 2021. He will join the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Loyola University Chicago as a tenure-track assistant professor this fall. Big congratulations!
Tianyi developed scDesign2, a statistical simulator that uses a copula-based probabilistic model to generate single-cell gene expression counts with gene correlations preserved. The work was published in Genome Biology. Congratulations!
In collaboration with Dr. Xin Tong, Jessica and Yiling developed the classical criterion (CC) and the Neyman-Pearson criterion (NPC) for model-free marginal feature ranking in classification. This work is published in Journal of Machine Learning Research.
Dongyuan developed PseudotimeDE, a statistical method that infers differentially expressed (DE) genes along cell pseudotime. PseudotimeDE considers the uncertainty of pseudotime inference, yields valid p-values, and has high power. The study was published in Genome Biology. Congratulations!
